Happy Thanksgiving everyone! We’re back again with a packed fight card of six battles to show our appreciation and thanks for roast battle fans, whore jokes, hella racist shit, and utter chaos.
Our judges’ table features two Roast Battle favorites returning to light the panel up again: Mike Lawrence and Jeff Ross. Both these guys are coming off of some good news. Mike just got selected to record his second Comedy Central half-hour, and the Roastmaster General’s newest special Jeff Ross Roasts The Border premiered last week with a lot of fanfare over its no-holds-barred approach to the flaws in our government’s immigration plan. If history has told us anything, it’s that these gents will take that same no-holds-barred energy to the show tonight while reacting to and judging tonight’s fight card. We can probably expect drop-ins from some of our regulars in the Belly Room to fill that final slot on the panel.
Taking the bullet tonight will be a man who’s literally taken bullets. Military vet William Gilliam will be taking on Chris Wilmoth. Both these guys have battled once before. Wilmoth won his battle with an impressive first bout in the ring, while Gilliam took a loss to Brother The, however it could be argued he should have taken the win. If their debuts are any indication of what is to come tonight, I think we can expect a well-written battle.
In the next battle, comedian and porn star Silvia Sage will take arms against comedian and stoner (I’m assuming), Stoner Rob. I know Silvia has only battled twice before, earning a 1-1 record in the process, but I’m going to trust my gut here and say this battle will probably be very entertaining and give the other elements of the show (ie. judges, Hater, Wave) a chance to work their magic.
Our next battle may prove a bit unconventional as musical comedians Kelsey Lane and Phil Kemp face off with instruments in hand. As Roast Battle trudges on, it often falls victim to repeat, worn out battlers, some who simply imitate established battlers or fall back on formulaic, unoriginal jokes. Any show, if it runs long enough, is bound to hit a wall and it’s up to those involved to bust these slumps. One of the tactics I personally believe will ensure the continued success of the show is for battlers to have fun, take risks, and bring an element to their battles that are unique to them and their brand of comedy. Whether or not this experimental “musical roast battle” goes well or fails miserably a la tag-team battles, I commend these two for attempting to bring something new to the table.
Moving on to some more experienced battlers, Lonnie Johnson and Kyle Gridley. Lonnie suffered defeat at the hands of Jacob Trimmer in his last battle, but remains one of the Belly Room’s consistent quality joke writers. Kyle Gridley has been less consistent, clocking some hits and misses in the Belly but the OC comic is a well-matched opponent for Johnson.
Wrapping up the undercards for the night will be Brett Erickson and Brent Duncan. Brett’s last battle was none too long ago against Dave Yates. He had a stellar performance and proved himself a formidable opponent. Brent Duncan, who has made a splash in the Roast Battle scene as well, suffered a misstep against Madison Sinclair in his most recent battle and now looks to redeem himself on this Brett on Brent battle.
Tonight’s main event features the physically versus mentally debilitated: Joe Eurell versus April Lotshaw. April recently returned to battling after a long break and a visit to the mental hospital. She’s not the first and won’t be the last (#metoo). However, upon her return, April proved that she’s back and she’s unstoppable. Equally unstoppable, I mean physically he’s totally stoppable, but as far as battles go, Joe, the ballsy, cerebral palsy-having motherfucker, is a Belly favorite with often room-shattering comebacks. These are some of the best up-and-coming main event battlers Roast Battle has to offer and it should be a fantastic battle.
