Our man Jay Light enters the ring tonight, so you know what that means. This intrepid reporter is going ringside to capture the action on Periscope! I have big shoes to fill. Last week, we had wifi problems and the stream was unavailable. So the buildup for this week’s feed will be instense. Also, Jay is the best! He knows how to capture the moments. Luckily, I re-watch in the ensuing twenty-four hours on Periscope, so I think I can recreate the experience. Can’t wait for the commenters! They’re always so clever and respectful! I thought I’d share my favorite photos from this perspective, the one from which Jay Periscopes. Before that make sure you check the new pod! Roast Battle princess, Olivia Grace (4-1,7), sits down to discuss her bout with Keith Carey (5-2, 6) and it is quite a listen. As always, these photos are provided by the eternally talented Troy Conrad.

Periscope probz. Good thing I have a case and insurance.

When you got a tennis racket and don’t like the ref in the front row but you just drank water.

Haiti trying to sneak by Guy Branum (3-0, 2HR), unsuccessfully.

Preview time?

Ahh yes, the Comedy Store’s Ice Queen returns! Iliza, like the Roastmaster, is always somewhere across the country entertaining her sizable fan base. That’s why were lucky she can stop by for such a great battle night! She takes judging seriously and can roast with the best of em. Check her site so you can see her live in a city near you and make sure to subscribe to her pod, “Truth and Iliza”.

Let’s welcome back Sam Tripoli (0-1, 17HR) to the judge’s table! Sam is a Comedy Store paid regular and very funny comedian. He’s got two great podcasts, International Bad Boys and Punch Drunk. Every time I’ve been on a show with Sam, he’s been a funny and chill dude. I’m excited for him to be here and not at all deterred by his ranking amongst the headliners.

Making his Roast Battle judging debut is Benji Aflalo! Benji has been handed the mic by Jeff Ross whilst sat in VIP and did not disappoint. He, along with Tony Hinchcliffe (1-1, 6HR), is a high lieutenant in the Roastmaster General’s comedy army. A paid regular and favorite of the #KILLTONY brand, his cutting style of humor and chemistry with the judges should lend itself to the show.

In the first of our undercards, Jordan Perry (0-0, UR) is taking on Haiti (0-0, 160), with both going for a first win!

We had a nice little story last week, what with Eric Carter (0-2, 126) saving roast face and all. Haiti was Eric’s opponent in what was the roasting equivalent of a butter knife duel. Maybe Haiti, whose birth name is still unknown, really did watch and learn and become a better roaster since his last battle. Maybe he’ll provide more than just an easy first win for Jordan Perry. Maybe Earl Skakel (2-1, 24) really is just playing a character. I doubt any of these are true, but we’ll see tonight. Jordan is a funny dude and is Jordan in “Jordan Perry and the Sexual Eruption”. They were last seen playing off Erik Marino’s “52 Weeks of Becca”. I think Jordan gets the easy win here.

And in our next undercard, Jared Levin (0-0, UR) and Alex Davenport (0-0, UR) will make their Roast Battle Debut against each other!

image

I have no idea what to expect for this battle. These two are some the…how should I say…unique individuals in the comedy scene. Jared Levin could be one of those guys where in ten years, he has crazy success and a rabid fan base or be in a crazy house with rabid hepatitis. He’s a former door guy at the Comedy Store and seems like a decent person. Hope you’re ready for spastic act-outs! Alex, another decent human, should be a worthy challenge. I see him from time to time and mic to mic and he does his thing. Can I pick a draw? Is that allowed? Oh, I’m the only one keeping track? K. Maybe Jared will win? I will commit to nothing

Our third undercard of the evening pits Al Bahmani (2-0, 32) against Roast Battle rookie and brand new door guy, Mike Schmidt (0-0, UR)!

image

Talk about trial by combat, amirite? Mike seems to following a path similar to Jay Light’s, wherein you become a door guy right around the time you make your debut in the battle, then you end up performing for everyone’s comedic heroes. Nice plan, Mike.  Al has had pretty good plan too. He collected a win, got better and won again and has been a generally chill dude in the scene. He helps where he can, mostly in the form of quick pics and check-ins, but his impact his felt around the Comedy Store. I would normally pick Al and his experience here but I’ll pick Mike for the upset. If only because he made it through the rigors that is the door guy hiring process.

And in our Main Event, Kimberly Congdon (5-0, 3) takes her undefeated record and matches against Roast Battle All-Pro, Jay Light (7-3, 4)!

Hot damn, this will be one for the Roast Battle record books. Not only is this a battle between two of the top four ranked battlers, Jay’s former roommate is none other than Frank Castillo (7-4, 12), veteran of the battle and the Wave. If any of Jay’s jokes are particularly mean, it’s because he’s got vengeance on his mind. Kim is also going for her sixth win in a row, a feat only achieved by the aforementioned Frank and the sorely missed, Ashley Barnhill (6-1, 10). Being that these two are some of the best we have, this could possibly go a fourth round. They are great roasters, funny comedians and staples around the comedy scene. Kim was just on Getting Doug with High and has her own line of custom t-shirts that support the #FreeTheNipple campaign. She’s on all the hottest shows including “The Hella Show”, a hella good show to go to, next Friday, October 23rd. Jay, a Hella show veteran himself, runs a great “showpen mic” called “Kinda Sketchy” every Thursday at Hyperion Tavern. His “One Dollar Comedy Show” is tomorrow night and should be attended by all. Wow, didn’t mean to turn the report into Plug City. The bottom line is these two are pros and this should be a Roast Battle Instant Classic. Girls don’t usually lose here at Roast Battle, the record being a healthy 17-8 in favor of the fairer sex, but I’ll pick my man Heavy Jay Light in the upset.

I am 54-35 in picks. Yea, I’m the only one keeping track. Wanna fight about it? Thanks as usual for reading and coming to the show. Listen to the podcast! Keep with the ranks! Headliner ranks too!
